Veggies On The Road (April Edition)

Aw3-thumb

The wonderful Veggies volunteer crew are still all hands to the pump as they continue their packed 2014 tour, catering at events around the country promoting social change, community spirit, care for animals and the planet. Veggies is an all-vegan, volunteer-led, social enterprise based in the Sumac Centre in Forest Fields, Nottingham. This month they have been catering at some very diverse events…

Veggies On The Road (March Edition)

Leiceste2-thumb

It's full steam ahead for Nottingham's all-vegan and volunteer-led catering campaign Veggies as their 2014 tour is in full swing, with more events being added all the time. Most recently they have taken part in Leicester's annual environmental event, the Greenlight Festival, and also travelled down to Milton Keynes to bring vegan food to activists taking part in an anti-vivisection demo.

Veggies Backs the Badgers!

Veggiesbad-thumb

Nottingham's ethical, all-vegan catering campaign Veggies has been on the road twice to Birmingham in the past few days, to show support for our scapegoated badger friends who are under attack from the Tory government. The government are trying to implement an appallingly misguided and underhand policy to cull one hundred thousand badgers in an effort to eradicate Bovine TB. As well as killing an …

Veggies outside DSEi: No to the Arms Trade

Dsei_1-thumb

Last week saw peaceful days of action co-ordinated by the 'Stop the Arms Fair Coalition' in response to the bi-annual arms fair DSEi (Defence & Security Equipment International) at the London ExCel Centre. DSEi is the world's largest arms fair and it exists so that arms buyers and sellers can come together, network and make deals.

From 'Campaign Against the Arms Trade' (CAAT): 'DSEi 2013 featured …

This Saturday just passed, Veggies was delighted to be catering at the tenth annual 'Nottinghamshire Pride' event: a vibrant celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender culture and an event respecting difference and promoting equality for all.

Another CCTV camera for Forest Fields

Yesterday a pair of CPOs were knocking on doors in the Wiverton Road/Foxhall Road area asking whether people were in favour or against a camera being installed at the crossroads. In their words - "We want to know if you're in favour or not, and if you are in favour we'd like to take your name and address to pass to the council."

The council are trying to pinpoint the people in our community who f…

N30 critical mass and free space

As well as the main pickets and march yesterday, a critical mass was organised to shut down the city. A group of 25 cyclists cycled (at extremely slow pace) around the city centre for a few hours after the march had finished, spreading the word about the strike and the fight against government cuts everywhere we went. There was a huge amount of public support for our message.

No Riot Evictions

In the months since the Nottingham riots, anarchists have been trying to kickstart a campaign against the victimisation of whole communities that has been called for by the state. The courts, with encouragement of the government, have been handing out much harsher sentences than usual, and Nottingham City Council leader Jon Collins has called for the families of rioters to be evicted from social h…

Anti-fascist prisoner support in Nottingham

Dscn0015-thumb

Nottingham Anarchist Black Cross have organised a series of events to support anarchist and class struggle prisoners, with particular focus given to the anti-fascist prisoner support UK campaign. A gig on Thursday was headlined by Belgian band Cop on Fire with Half Boy/Half Rat supporting and a second gig on Tuesday featured the ReSistas, Hectic Egg and El Dia. The anti-fascist prisoners supp…

Resistas, Hectic Egg & El Dia at Sumac

Dscn0006-thumb

Notts ABC put on another great fundraiser last night. A night of radical feminist DIY music, spoken word and zines featured the ReSistas from Vienna as well as locals Hectic Egg and El Dia. There was a great turnout and atmosphere and some really amazing performances and all proceeds will go towards prisoner support.

Antifascist benefit a big success

The Nottingham antifascist benefit gig last night was a great success. The Sumac experienced a very busy Thursday night indeed as Belgian dub punksters Cop on Fire and Bristolians Half Boy/Half Rat dished out some heavy vibrations. The gig raised over £100 for UK antifascist prisoners.

Dispersal order in Forest Fields

110508_d300s_011-thumb

A dispersal order will be in place in Forest Fields from Saturday 16th April until 5th Oct 2011. There has been concern from some local residents about what the implications of this will be. A public meeting was held at the Sumac on 24th April, information about the dispersal orders on lamposts has been graffitied and a poster campaign against the order has begun.

On the newswire: Forest Field…

Dispersal orders: Information for resistance

This is an attempt to collect some relevant information and analysis to help resist dispersal orders. It is focused on the situation in Nottingham as a campaign has sprung up recently to resist the order imposed on Forest Fields.

NCC have no answers to the cuts

Not wanting to let the City Council's cuts consultation exercise pass unchallenged, I attended their "We asked. You said, What next?" meeting at Forest Fields Community Centre tonight. Councillor Hassan Ahmed claimed that he and the council were opposed to the cuts but when questioned further this opposition seemed to be rather abstract. Local people deserve a lot better than him and his cronies.

The Sumac Debates

The Sumac Debates are back by popular demand.

Every week a different theme will be discussed in an open debate. The first six themes are outlined below and they will be followed by such things as "Why not the G20?" and "Grassroots and Mass movements"

As the poster states they begin at 7:30, and will sometimes be introduced with a short talk or film, watch this space for more details on that, …

CCTV in Forest Fields: Lessons from Brum

One of the things that most disturbs friends from other countries when they first arrive in Britain is the omnipresence of CCTV. Whilst in Europe people are used to seeing cameras at major stations and airports and on government buildings and banks, they are nothing like as prevalent as the cameras we have. And they are certainly never stationed in residential neighbourhoods (or the toilets of jun…

Nottingham Pride - Political Speakers

To coincide with Nottingham's Pride event, which ended on the Forest Rec, local LGBT activists organised a public meeting to discuss the political freedom and human rights of the LGBT community across the world. Peter Tatchell, Skye Chirape (lesbian activist and artist from Zimbabwe) and Claire Jenkins (trans-activist) spoke about LGBT struggles for recognition and freedom in different parts of th…

Nottingham hosts "first ever Vegan Beer Festival"

Mir-thumb

On June 5-6, the Sumac Centre hosted the "first ever Vegan Beer Festival". Vegans and vegetarians are wary of real ales as they often use isinglass, derived from the swim bladders of fish, to make it less cloudy. This inspired a number of local vegans to organise the real ale festival as a way of demonstrating that there is an alternative.
